Eric Maclewis - BAGPIPE SOUNDS
Eric Maclewis
This tune can be found in particular in the Scots Guards (vol.2 - p.108) under the name I See Mull, classified as Retreat Air.
It was transmitted to me by Fred Morrison in an initial interpretation quite far from a March: free to each piper to make his sensitivity speak for example by pressing more or less the fermata indicated as well as the various appoggiatures on the A.
Open D throws can be replaced if necessary by closed (heavy) D throws.
It is also possible - as Fred does - to follow a first fairly free exposition of the melody by a more rhythmic and fast playing, leading to a March.
PRACTICE CHANTER:
- The main technical difficulty here lies in the quality of execution of the D Throws: play very clearly, with a firm low G, a fairly light C; the first note of the embellishment (low G) will be placed on the beat or very slightly in front of it.
As a variant and once the open D Throw is well acquired, one can consider replacing it with a closed D Throw, as you wish.
