Cet air a été écrit ou adapté pour cornemuse écossaise par le Pipe Major William Robb (1863-1909; Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders) au XIXème siècle.
La mélodie comporte, dans sa première phrase, quelques traits en commun avec un air antérieur, accompagnant un poème de l'irlandais Thomas Moore (1805) : The Last Rose Of Summer.
On pourra l'interpréter à un tempo de 86, par exemple juste derrière The Green Hills Of Tyrol.
NB : s'agissant des airs militaires de retraite (Retreat March ou Air), il ne faut pas se laisser « abuser » par le mot retraite qui laisse à penser que ces mélodies sont jouées à un moment particulier d'une bataille.
Au contraire ces airs sont plutôt interprétés au camp pour rythmer une période de la journée comme la fin du service de jour.
