MARV PONTKALLEG
(Pontkalleg's Death)
This text came to us thanks to the collection made by Théodore Hersart de La Villemarqué, published in several editions since 1839 under the title “Barzhaz Breizh”.
Consisting of a set of songs in the Breton language, accompanied by their melodic lines, this book is a precious testimony to Brittany. It has also served as a source of inspiration for many Breton artists.
The song - gwerz meaning Lament - is presented here in a contemporary form in the version of Gilles Servat (1994). It tells us the story of the death (Breton “Marv” = pronounce Maro) of the Marquis de Pontkalleg, executed in 1720 after the failure of a conspiracy inspired by pre-revolutionary themes and independence of Brittany.
Part of his history can be found in Bertrand Tavernier's French movie "Que la fête commence (1975)".
Treitour ah! Mallozh dit refers to the betrayal that led the Marquis to the scaffold in Nantes (“Naoned” in Brittany).
