La mélodie a été composée en 1903 par James Scott Skinner, en hommage à son ami, le Major-Général Sir Hector Archibald MacDonald (1853-1903).
Celui-ci, d'une origine modeste, sorti du rang par son seul mérite, s'est maintes fois distingué au combat et a été entre autres promu au rang d'aide de camp de la reine Victoria.
La maladie ainsi que des rumeurs calomnieuses l'ont conduit au suicide le 25 mars 1903 : J.S. Skinner composa cette complainte deux jours après sa disparition.
Skinner, joueur de fiddle (pop. pour violon), est une référence en matière de musique et danse traditionnelles écossaises.
Il a été parmi les premiers musiciens écossais à être enregistré à partir de 1899 : Hector The Hero a d'ailleurs été enregistré pour la première fois le 30 janvier 1905.
